  • I believe that there is profound value in learning the cello at any age. The ultimate goal is connection- to express ourselves through the music, in order to connect with our listeners, ourselves, and those who composed the music. This goal is pursued over time by building and bringing together many different skills, including physical, technical, mental, musical, emotional, and observational skills. I work directly with the student (and sometimes the parent, as appropriate) to create a custom and responsive learning environment where each student can grow and flourish as a unique learner and musician. I emphasize the systematic creation of a solid technical foundation, use mindfulness as a tool for progress, and cultivate a joyful attention to detail as a means of interpreting music and fanning the flame of each individual’s unique musical voice. Practicing at home is encouraged in whatever way is feasible for the student- I meet each student wherever they are at each lesson. It is an honor and a joy for me to learn alongside my students.

  • I offer 30-minute, 45-minute, 60-minute, and 90-minute private cello lessons in person at my home in St. Paul, or virtually online. I teach students of all ages, levels, abilities, and backgrounds- all are welcome. I offer flexible scheduling- students typically schedule lessons month to month, to allow for special events and family travel. I also offer seasonal schedule flexibility to support students who are involved with sports, college applications, or other activities with high seasonal demands. I offer two opportunities to perform on student recitals each year, and I support those who are involved in school and/or youth orchestras by thoroughly preparing with them for auditions, and making lesson time available for questions about ensemble music. I also encourage students to participate in local competitions and summer camps.

**I have a special interest in working with pre-professional students who are preparing for graduate school auditions, orchestra auditions, or who are working on growing their skills as a teacher. **

  • I was born into a musical family, and started playing the cello at age 3.5. I took some time away from the cello in college, but decided to pursue the cello seriously in graduate school, earning a Master of Music (2009) and a Certificate in Performance (2011) from DePaul University in Chicago. Professionally, I split my career evenly between teaching and performing (you can read more about this here, and find out where to hear a concert here). I have taught private students of all ages (as young as 3 and as old as 88) and all abilities (beginner to graduate student) continuously since 2006. I use a personal hybrid pedagogy which incorporates many things from my own experience, including my training as a Suzuki teacher, and my extensive background in music theory and history. I am currently on the faculty at Winona State University and Hamline University, and previously taught at the University of Wisconsin- River Falls, Eastern Illinois University, Illinois State University, and DePaul University. In addition to private lessons, I have taught collegiate masterclasses at universities across the United States, and lead sectionals for middle school and high school students through countless school orchestra and youth orchestra programs. I estimate that I have worked with well over 1000 cello students through all of these avenues combined.

  • "In addition to being an accomplished musician, Ruth Marshall is a gifted teacher. Ruth does not hand out answers. Rather, she skillfully guides and questions my child allowing her to find her own answers and passion to play. Ruth is flexible and spontaneous when needed. One day, in the middle of a lesson, my daughter asked, "can we play this in a round" and, without hesitation, Ruth said, "sure!" Ruth inquires about outside activities and laughs with my daughter. Our lessons are productive from the minute they start until the end! Thank you, Ruth. " -A.G, parent

"I have been studying with Ruth for almost 3 years now. She is incredibly caring of her students and very thorough with her instruction, and is very patient. You will not regret studying with Ruth!"- E.Z., student (17)

“My son was In the 3rd grade when he began cello lessons with Ms. Marshall. He was struggling in school with ADHD which affected his confidence. Ms. Marshall determined to work with our son as a respected unique individual, and she believed in him. They worked together happily for 5 years. Our son went on to cello camp and to participate in a local youth orchestra. He played in his high school orchestra and has participated in the excellent orchestra at the engineering university he presently attends. Ms. Marshall and the cello have made an enormous impact in our son’s life. I give my most enthusiastic endorsement of Ms. Marshall and hope you are lucky enough to have her teach you too! She is a blessing.“ –C.W., parent

“I enjoy being Ms. Ruth’s student because she is very focused and I learn a lot of new techniques and other things in every single lesson. It’s joyful and challenging to learn playing cello with Ms. Ruth, definitely one of my highlights during the week!” -E.T., student (11)

“I came to Ruth as an adult student with no prior string experience. She was the picture of patience and good humor, with very clear instructions, helping me to progress at an encouraging rate. I would recommend Ruth for any age!” -J.D., student
